During your pregnancy you learned a tremendous amount especially in terms of relationships. By watching the marriage of the adoptive parents of your child fall apart. Which enabled you to really see what is important in a relationship. That each person has to be happy with basically every aspect of their partner’s personality. This experience has caused you to see this and make your relationship with Bleeker more serious. With that being said I find it difficult to determine specifically what I think of your decision to go through with the pregnancy. Yes I worked out well for you and Vanessa as she seemed to be very happy at the end of the film. But it could have gone the opposite. If you were to have backed out of the adoption early or decided after the birth to see/get attached to the baby, meaning you were to keep it. It could have altered your future life plans, like attending college etc. With all that said, considering your age I think you should have gotten an abortion. As you took on a responsibility beyond your maturity level, though biologically you were obviously capable. Ultimately the choice of abortion was up to you.
If I were to ever accidentaly get a girl pregnant I would advise my partner to get an abortion, because I am unsure if my future will fit children. And I would not want to alter my life goals/plan around a child. Birth control should be taught more than just a day in school, its importance should be expressed more thoroughly. And retaught in the senior year of high school before seniors go off to college or other wise. I think birth control/family planning is important and should be encouraged in school as humans are animals and in being so will want to have sex. Which is natural as biologically all living things “live” to ensure the survival of the species. So you can’t avoid it all that should be done is education to make people smarter about sex, using protection until they are ready to start a family. Which I believe is lacking in America’s school systems. Yes it may be kind of awkward to talk about but it is better than teens becoming pregnant because they were not properly educated about birth control.
In regards to Roe vs Wade I am in favor of it as I believe it should be ultimately a woman’s choice whether she chooses to have an abortion. She should be free of criticism of those who disagree as it is her body and her unique situation which may not fit a child at the moment. So privacy should be of the utmost importance so woman can be comfortable with their decision. A lot of opposition to Roe vs Wade is based on religion which yes I respect everyone's religion and what you believe is up to you personally. But you should not impose it on other attempting to effect the course of one’s life. More specifically when politicians using the claim that a human life starts at conception is ridiculous as conception is the fusion of a sperm cell and an egg as cellular division takes place. Plus who are politicians to make statements when a clump of cells becomes a human. They don’t have a degree in biology or human physiology, the scientific community should make these kinds of statements. Yes the zygote may contain the genetic code of an entire human being, but these cells are special in that they are undifferentiated and are capable of becoming numerous different cells which eventually will make up a human being. Now if we progress a little further into the embryonic stage a human embryo is initially almost unrecognizable from that of reptiles, birds, and other mammals. Well with the exception of fish, which are the odd ones out as they look distinctly different. So I find it hard to claim it is a human being, it is a human embryo but it looks alien to most. I would argue that in some ways human life does not begin until birth where the baby is able to function to a limited capacity, and able to breathe air. Before birth human babies is almost parasitic, depending fully on the mother for nutrients and even causing calcium resorption to occur when the osteoclasts in bone break down calcium in bones specifically from the mother and release it into the bloodstream. This is necessary for the fetus to build its own bones. The baby may be technically alive but its life is solely dependent on the mother as it lives inside her. I’m not trying to paint babies as parasites i’m just saying their dependence on the mother during development is much akin to a parasitic dependence on a host. Now I agree that there should be a limit to when an abortion can be performed as there is now the 28 week limit seems fine to me. Except for cases where complications with the fetus or if the fetus is found to have a disease in which the baby will suffer with. As the mother's health should always come first. In which case a cesarean section is more appropriate to ensure the baby will not suffer upon birth and won’t pose a threat to the mother. Also in terms of abortions I do not see any harm in donating fetus/embryonic tissue to stem cell research. As stem cell research is one of the most promising/ground breaking aspects of current medical research. I stated earlier how special embryonic tissue in the sense that it can literally differentiate into any form of tissue in the human body. Meaning with further research we could use stem cells to grow new cardiac muscle tissue to help those with heart disease, or even differentiate into new neurons to aid those with parkinson’s disease. If anything a woman whose fetus’ tissue is going to be sent for research should be thanked and told this research will save lives. They are essentially saving lives. Women’s reproductive rights should be protected and private as the 14th amendment protects this privacy.
